The Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Tour’s Nilai Springs Closed Championship in Negeri Sembilan had Anis Hassan and Nicholas Fung at the top of the leaderboard after the opening round today.

The leaders shot matching four-under 68s in the RM180,000 tournament at Nilai Springs Golf & Country Club. Those efforts ensured a two-stroke cushion at the top on a day when the leaderboard was jam-packed.

With scoring low not forthcoming as has been the recent trend on the Tour, there was a five-way tie for third place on two-under 70 where amateur player Khavish Varman stood out alongside Iylia Jamil, Shaaban Hussin, Solomon Emilio and Kiishaan Tharmalingam.

Kim Leun Kwang and Kemarol Baharin both shot 71s and were joint eighth, with Sukree Othman, Airil Rizman, Lam Kong Loong and Kenneth De Silva tied for 10th another stroke back. Then there was a 13-way tie on one-over 71, among them amateur player Low Khai Jei and past Tour winners Akhmal Tarmizee, Ben Leong and Hans Jamil.

Speaking after the opening round, PGM Tour Chairman, YABhg Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid said they were pleased to see so many of the top players in action at Nilai Springs.

“Apart from a few players, we have the top guns on Tour here at Nilai Springs,” said Tun Ahmad Sajir. “This bodes well for the Tour as not only does it become more difficult to win out here, but it also enhances the quality of golf being played.

“The absence of a few of the leading players is down to them playing on the Asian Tour and niggling injury worries,” said Mior. “And that aside, we are looking forward to another exciting golf tournament this week.”
