Kajang, 10 December 2014: Arie Irawan, one of the top form players of the second half of the Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Tour, made a strong start to the season finale at Impian Golf & Country Club today – the RM350,000 Players Championship.
Knocking on the door for a breakthrough win with more than one close finish, the 24-year-old, who was born in Miri, Sarawak, and now resides in Kuala Lumpur, shot an opening round eight-under 64 to lead the tournament by three strokes.
“The main thing now is to remain focused on taking it one shot at a time,” said Irawan. “I played solid golf today and hopefully I can continue to do the same over the next three days.
“I am comfortable with how I have played recently and that is what I must try to continue to do.”
In second place, and seeking a second PGM Tour Order of Merit title, following his first success in 2011, was R. Nachimuthu who fired a five-under 67.
Just two shots back on 69, was the Order of Merit leader, Airil Rizman, who leads Nachimuthu in the standings.
Speaking of his start here, Nachimuthu said he was pleased with today’s proceedings and was just trying to concentrate on improving his overall performance as he bids for a third Tour title this term.
“I hit the ball okay today,” he said. “And overall I’m happy with how I played but I can do better and must focus on trying to improve by cutting out a few mistakes.”
