Airil Rizman seized the third round lead of the Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Tour I&P Group Closed Championship at Kinrara Golf Club in Puchong today.

The Tour’s reigning Player of the Year carded a six-under-par 65 for a 10-under 203 total, with a day to go. That effort gave him a one-stroke lead over Kenneth De Silva, who had a third round 67 to sit on 204.

Nicholas Fung, who had a share of the lead at the halfway stage yesterday, shot a 69 and fell back to third place, two strokes off the top.

Sukree Othman, who opened with a 66 and has been showing flashes of his old form, carded a 69 today for a seven-under 206 total, and yet another shot back.

Equaling Airil’s six-under for the low round of the day was Akhmal Tarmizee, who climbed to six-under 207 for a tie of fifth place alongside M. Sasidaran and first round leader Shaaban Hussin 71. Hans Jamil’s 71 left him in sole possession of eighth place on 208.

One-time Tour winner Akhmal said he was especially happy with how he played today and looked forward to tomorrow, when he would attempt to do the same by “keeping focused on one shot at a time” and play his “own game”.

“I really did play well today,” said the player who turns 26 in December. “I hit 15 greens in all and gave myself several chances at birdie, which helped me through a round when I had not a single bogey on the card.”

Akhmal, who posted a 70 in the first round and a 72 yesterday, had three birdies over each nine.

Airil, meanwhile, had an eagle at the par-5 10th hole and added another two before the end. He started his round with a birdie but gave the shot back with a bogey at the 3rd hole. That was his only blemish on the day as he rattled in another two birdies before the turn.
